They use a piece of bread, a feather, a leaf or other floating objects as bait. They put it out in the water to try to lure in a fish. If it is unsuccessful, he will just take his bait and throw it out and try again. I think this is amazing! Some people think that the green herons got the idea by watching anglers use bait to fish. Maybe you might wonder why the bird doesn't just eat the bread instead of using it as bait. No one knows for sure, but maybe they are like so many species that looks for the best meal possible. However, they don't always use bait to fish. Sometimes they will do deep dives for prey. Click the "Read More" button below to learn more.
Many of the green herons that breed here in the U.S. and in Canada overwinter in Mexico and the Caribbean. However, green herons have year-round residences in Florida, along the Gulf Coat to southern Texas and even in southern California.
So be on the look-out, and if you see other smart behaviors of birds or if you have another hypothesis of why they use the bread as bait rather than eating it, please let me know. I would love to know what you think and what you have seen! #greenheron
